Well, I tried Zenwalk Xfce v. 5.2 on my old IBM T22 laptop /900Mhz proc, 256M ram/ and I have to admit, unlike other linux distros, it performed very well. Cool memory saving, no swapping, clever choice of apps and nice to look at. only the ACPI functions like sleep or blankscreen didnt work. All in all i give it 8 points out of 10 for this distro. I agree the package stuff is limited compared to lets say Ubuntu. However one of few unices that would run very fast new versions of apps on your old machine.

This distro is compatible with the vast majority of slackware packages available from slackware proper or 3rd parties such as linuxpackages.net, so there are plenty of packages available outside of ZW's own repo. I have personally tested the xfce version and its very nice..a few rough edges but still very usable. This distro's best for an older system and it really flies on a fast modern system

Zenwalk is a VERY good distro. I prefer the XFCE version, but am sure the Gnome version will fill a need.

Regarding the bottom panel in Zenwalk, I actually increase the size a little and then set it to autohide. Now it is perfect.

To be fair i don't think zenwalk to be as fast as you state, nor the xfce nor gnome versions. My test machine is a P4 2.8 which handles every distro very well. I have tested on my laptop too with the same results and i'm not the only one who complains about this, just read other zenwalk reviews.
As for being a good slackware distro...it is... the repos are almost empty but netpkg works. The gnome version presents me some bugs, i could not move the bottom panel to nowhere, i use to have standard gnome thin panels up and down but for some unknown reason i was stuck with the panel, well, its just a beta for now.
